Booker at the Beck –Indoor Picnic with entertainment by local historian & occasional D. J. Bob Booker. Come dressed for an air conditioned old fashioned picnic in our recently renovated location at 1927 Dandridge Avenue. Spend some time with Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and First Lady Crissy Haslam as you enjoy down home food and down home music. Limited seating ,$60 per person. Part of the 2008 Summer Suppers Series of Knox Heritage.

September 27, 2008 Grandest Grandparent 2008 Celebration. Join us as we recognize some of Knoxville’s outstanding grandparents. This years gala will be held at the downtown Marriott, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Nomination forms are available at the Center or they can be downloaded from our website

Experience the art of John Simms-fine artist. Mr. Simms is the founder, principal artist and designer of Simms Creative Services.

The Beck Cultural ExchangeCenter. Inc. was founded in 1975 Since its inception, the Center has reached more than a half million people. from local residents to individuals from all over the world. This has been achieved through cultural exhibits and resource materials including: books, journals. newspapers, scrapbooks, audio recording and other memorabilia. The Center is located within walking distance of the famed Alex Haley statue. Visitors are greeted by the Beck Center staff, who invites them to complete a Tressure Hunt. They are then treated to an oral account of the middle pas sage and personal accounts of the modern day civil rights heroes and events. The final phase is a vision of fifteen years into the future and the potential contributions of those touring which may be commemorated in the Center’s future collections. The staff invites them to visit themselves in the future and assist them in preparing a mental map of their journey to the future.

The Center is also used as a meeting place for several high school classes and organizations and is available for rental after hours at very affordable rates



BECK CENTER HONORS GRANDPARENTS

Grandparents not only play a central role in their families and communities, they also represent living history. Beck Cultural Exchange Center invites you to nominate your grandparent or special elder for the "Grandest Grandparents 2008". Join us in celebrating these very special members of our community. The theme for this years Celebration is Grandparents, "Our living libraries". This year marks the 9th biennial celebration the Center has hosted the event in cooperation with Knoxville News Sentinel, WBIR and Pilot Corporation.
Send your nomination form and a short essay telling us why your grandparent is so special. Nominees will be honored and a selection of their stories will be showcased at the Grandest Grandparents Luncheon hosted by Edye Ellis on September 27 at the Knoxville Downtown Marriott.

Beck Cultural Exchange Center, Inc. was established in 1975 to serve as a forum of artistic expression and historical perspective for African Americans in Knoxville and East Tennessee.
