ABOUT US
The
East Tennessee Woodworkers Guild was founded in 1983 by five area
woodworkers. The original members formed a non-profit
organization to encourage the development and appreciation of fine
woodworking. They were also interested in maintaining high
standards within the craft. their enthusiasm and obvious
technical expertise, as well as their willingness to share their
knowledge about the craft, soon attracted many others to their new
organization.
Today's Guild numbers about 75 individual from across
East Tennessee. The Guild continues to reflect the original
purpose of our founders. We encourage all woodworkers,
whatever
their abilities within the field, to learn more and further improve
upon their skills. Towards this end, the East Tennessee
Woodworkers Guild holds meetings on the second Monday of odd-numbered
months (i.e. January, March, May, etc.) at 6:30 at Maryville High
School Woodworkil Woodworking Shop. Each meeting features a
speaker covering some aspect of woodworking.
In addition to
regularly scheduled meetings, there are other activities available
throughout the year. There is an annual picnic, open shops
where
we gather at a fellow member's hideaway, an occasional tour of a
woodworking facility (we toured the Powermatic plant a few years ago),
and an annual retreat for woodworkers at Gatlinburg.
Our members
come from all walks of life and arrive at the East Tennessee
Woodworkers Guild with woodworking skills ranging from rank novice to
accomplished master. Prospective members are encouraged to
come
to a meeting, check us out, and if you like what you see (and who you
meet) join us in the pursuit of understanding this ancient craft.
