WORDS
ON THE HEART, ACTIONS IN THE HOME
There is a classic passage about family
life found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. It is short, simple, and quite profound. Let
us examine its God-given wisdom and make suitable application.
THE DEUTERONOMY FACTOR (1:5;
10:12; CF. Mic. 6:8)
1. Key
Passages: Deuteronomy 4:9-10; 6:4-9; 11:18-21; 32:46-47.
2. Points
of emphasis:
a. God’s
Primacy.
b. Our
complete devotion to God.
c. The
revelation of God.
d. The
internalization of the word of God.
e. The
“matter-of-fact” living of the word daily.
f. Reminders
of the truth.
THE PLACE OF THE HEART (I Sam.
16:7; I Chron. 28:9; I Kg. 8:39)
1. The
heart can be the seat of evil (Prov. 23:6-7; Mk. 7:20-23).
2. The
heart, however, is intended to be a key in faithful living (Matt. 5:8; 6:21;
15:8).
3. From
Moses to Jesus, a good heart is critical to acceptability with God (Deut. 6:5;
Mk. 12:30; Rom. 8:26-27; Heb. 4:12).
GOD WOULD NOT SIMPLY HAVE US DO
THINGS, HE WOULD HAVE US TO BE SOMETHING (Rom. 8:29)
1. What
we do
is to be based on what we are (Heb. 10:22; I Pet. 1:22).
2. Otherwise
we are hypocrites (Matt. 23:1-39).
3. Mere
outward gestures are not enough (Matt. 23:5).
APPLICATIONS FOR THE HOME—THE
MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT COMMON WAY OF THINGS (I Jn. 3:18)
1. Trustworthiness
(I Cor. 4:2).
2. Consistency
(Heb. 13:8).
3. Proper
Priorities (John 4:34).
4. Honesty
(Mk. 12:14).
5. Faithfulness
(II Tim. 4:7).
6. Fairness
(John 5:30).
7. Kindness
(Col. 3:12).
8. Uncompromising
With Truth (Matt. 4:4,7, 10).
9. Challenging
In Expectations (Rom. 8:29).
10. Practicing
Brotherhood (Rom. 12:5).
11. Forgiving
(Eph. 4:32).
12. Love
(I Cor. 13:4-8a).
When God’s word is in our heart, our
actions in the home will be effective in creating the environment God desires.
