MARK’S
REVELATION OF THE CHRIST
Mark 1:21-27
The Gospel of Mark, originally written to a
Roman audience, is a gospel of action. Depending on the translation, words like
“straightway” and “immediately” are used to show Jesus as a man of action—a
characteristic valued by the Romans. Let us have a look at this energetic view
of the Messiah.
WHO IS HE?
1. “What
is this” (1:27)?
2. “We
have never seen anything like this” (2:12)!
3. “And they were watching Him…that they might
accuse Him” (3:2).
4. “Who
then is this…” (4:41)?
5. “And
immediately they were completely astounded” (5:42)!
6. “And
people were saying…” (6:14-15).
7. “And
there were five thousand men that ate of the loaves” (6:44).
8. “…and
they were greatly astonished…” (6:51).
9. “Why
do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders…” (7:5).
THE EVIDENCE
1. Power
over the Satan (1:21-28).
2. Power
over disease, and sin (2:1-12).
3. Power
over the tyranny of hard hearts (3:1-6).
4. Power
over nature (4:35-41).
5. Power
over death (5:21-24, 35-43).
6. Power
to generate unparalleled debate (6:14-16).
7. Power
over limited resources (6:30-44).
8. Power
over human limitations (6:45-52).
9. Power
over the traditions of men (7:1-23).
THE ANSWER
1. The
people’s answer—an unusually good man (8:27-28).
2. God’s
answer—the Christ, the Son of God (8:29; cf. Matt. 16:15-17).
THEREFORE
1. He
had to die, but He would be resurrected (8:31-33; 9:31; 14:1-16:13).
2. Followers
must deny self and take up a cross (8:34-36; 10:17-22; 11:20-26; 16:14-20).
3. The
Messianic kingdom would come with salvation for the faithful and judgment for
all unbelievers (9:1; 12:1-12; 13:1-37).
4. Jesus
would be God’s final, unique spokesman (9:2-8; 12:13-44; cf. Heb. 1:1-2).
5. Service
would be the way of true greatness (9:33-37; 10:35-45).
