Beeswax is made by honey bees, and used to hold their food, and their young. Man harvests the beeswax and uses it for many things. It is used as a lubricant, as a furniture polish, to protect metals, as an ingredient in makeup, and as a medium in the lost wax method of metal casting. In ancient Egypt it was used during mummification. Beeswax is probably best known for its use in candle making. During medieval times beeswax candles were used by nobles, the peasants were left to use tallow, which smoked excessively, and smelled bad. Today with the many advances in lighting, candles have been relegated to a mainly ceremonial or decorative role. Beeswax candles burn cleaner and longer than parafin candles.
