Program for 4/20/06, 7:30 pm.
Michael Murray
Radiological Assistance Program
Department of Energy
Michael will discuss radioactivity in the environment (rocks, soil, etc.) and consumer products. He will also discuss when you should be careful and how to protect yourself when around radioactive materials. This will include the proper methods to store any radioactive mineral specimens in your collection. Simple instrumentation and gamma spectroscopy will be demonstrated. He will bring a few specimens that you may be familiar with but did not know were radioactive. If you suspect, or know you have a mineral / fossil / item that is radioactive bring it to the meeting where Michael can identify the radioactive components for you.

May Picnic
11:30-ish until ????
Linda Matvy has arranged to reserve picnic shelters at Melton Hill Dam for May and September.
May picnic: Saturday, May 20, Shelter # 3. This is not our favorite shelter as it is down by the water, but neither of the topside shelters were available. September picnic: Saturday, September 23, Shelter # 2
Directions to Melton Hill Lake
Take Exit 364 off I-40 west to Tennessee Highway 95 at Lenoir City. Turn north toward Oak Ridge and go about ¾ mile. Do not cross the bridge over the river, but turn right into the Melton Hill Reservation. Once on the Melton Hill Reservation, go past the dam. The shelter will be on the left. Bring your appetite and a dish to share. The club will provide the meat and beverages, as usual.
See you there!
