Music

One of Ms. Georgi's xylophones.

Monday is music day at KMS!

Music instruction is provided to each class by Ms. Georgi Schmitt, a nationally acclaimed Montessori-trained Orff music instructor. The program is based on the Orff approach to music education, developed by German composer-teacher Carl Orff (composer of the Carmina Burana).

The process begins with the child's world of play, and spirally builds music concepts and skills while involving the child actively in movement, speech, rhythm, singing, playing instruments, and improvisation.

The focus in the Primary classes is on language development through simple repetitive songs and speech patterns, as well as appropriate movement and rhythmic play.

In the Elementary class, the children begin reading music as they play the recorder, and the song repertoire is expanded to include rounds accompanied by simple ostinati (repeated patterns) which the children play on unpitched and melodic instruments.

Throughout, the child's voice is treated as an instrument of expression, with guidance in the development of accurate pitch control. And the children are exposed to music from a variety of time periods and countries.

So if you visit on music day, don't be surprised if you find the children singing, playing instruments, and dancing as part of the ensemble experience.

We sing, we dance, we make music . . . and everybody has fun!!!
