It is called the Traveling Trunk.  A tool kit developed by educators and citizens concerned about hate violence in our society - past and present.  Members of the Hate Crimes Working Group developed the teaching aid.  Its simple, recognizable symbols of hatred will spark discussion in any group.

There is a noose representing the untold story of African Americans hung to death for the "crime of being black"; a charred cross, made notorious by the KKK and others to strike fear in Blacks in the name of religion; a yellow Star of David, a symbol of anti-Semites' hatred of Jews and prosthetic limbs to depict physically challenged persons.  Some will see the bar of soap and lampshade - symbols of the Holocaust when bodies of Death Camp victims were turned into products for their Nazi captors.  Trunk presenters will not use all items at all presentations, but will use age-appropriate examples.

The trunk is not just for school or church groups.   Sponsors want to use it to raise adult awareness of hate crimes in our community.

"This kind of educational tool lends itself to interactions and group discussions.  It is different from 'talk-at' lectures." - Bobbi McGarity, Assistant Superintendent, Knox County Schools
