Dr. Mark Smith, FASM (and ASM International Trustee) from Sandia National Laboratories will be giving a presentation on Enabling Science and Technology for National Security Applications:
Advancements in science and technology are playing an important role in the battle to enhance the safety and security of our nation. This presentation discusses some unclassified examples of national security related research and development activities at Sandia National Laboratories, with special emphasis on the role of materials science and technology. Advances in materials and process science are enabling new high-technology local and remote sensors that will enhance our security by improving our ability to rapidly and inexpensively detect and identify potentially hazardous materials. Hi-tech solutions are also being developed to render biological and chemical hazards harmless and to safely disable explosives. This national security oriented presentation should be of interest to non-technical guests (spouses, parent/student night) as well as those engaged in materials related professions..

About the speaker . . .

Dr. Mark Smith received his graduate and undergraduate degrees at Iowa State University before joining Sandia National Laboratory, Albuquerque, N.M., in 1981 and is best known for his work on thermal spray technology. In 1993, Dr. Smith began serving as an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at New Mexico Tech (New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology). He is currently deputy director of their Advanced Manufacturing Science and Technology Center which annually conducts nearly $60 million of R&D to support various national security programs. He was recently inducted into the Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, founded by the ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) which he helped form in the mid 1980s. He served 3 terms on the TSS Board and helped start what is now known as the International Thermal Spray Conference. Dr. Smith was also the founding chairman of the Editorial Review Committee for the TSS Journal of Thermal Spray Technology. He is presently an ASM International Trustee and an ASM Fellow. Mark and his father are among the few living pairs of father-son Fellows of ASM.

Please RSVP by filling out this form, or contacting our Meeting Registration Chair, Amit Shyam, by e-mail or phone at 865.241.4841. We must have an accurate count of attendees by noon on Friday, October 12th, so please make your reservation on time if you plan on attending dinner. Our price structure has changed again. But don’t dispair! The normal meeting price has gone down!! Back to $20!!! The technical portions of our meetings are free to all, of course, but we do need to charge if you plan on joining us for the accompanying dinners. Students are completely free, if they register for the meeting on time— $5 otherwise. And season passes—which are valid for the 6–7 planned normal technical meetings this season*—will still be available for the same price as last year: $75—still a great deal!

Footnotes

* Season passes are not valid for Industry Night or the Educational Symposium.
