Past Chair Night

Important note: This meeting is on Thursday, January 17th. The registration deadline is important to help us plan the event  . . . please register by noon on Friday, January 11th. Why not just register now? Thank you!

Dr. Larry Taylor, Director of the University of Tennessee Plantetary Geosciences Institute, will be giving a presentation on President Bush's Full service Gas station on the Moon:
In 2005, President Bush proposed a permanent Moon base which could be used as a platform for future missions to Mars and beyond. One purpose of a Moon base is to provide a source of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen for space vehicles. With an almost perfect vacuum for an atmosphere, temperatures ranging from +280°F to -280°F, and with severe solar and galactic radiation, the Moon presents settlers with an array of difficult challenges. In his presentation, Dr. Taylor will examine the geologic studies of lunar rocks and soil from the six U.S. Apollo and three Soviet Luna missions. From these data he provides the basis for habitat design, and the production of oxygen, water, and food. Since the transportation cost of material from Earth is $5,000 per pound, planners must think like our pioneer ancestors and learn to "live off the land." (Presentation will be appropriate for general audiences.).

Make your reservation

Please RSVP by filling out this form, or contacting our Meeting Registration Chair, Amit Shyam, by e-mail or phone at 865.241.4841. We must have an accurate count of attendees by noon on Friday, January 11th, so please make your reservation on time if you plan on attending dinner. (Please RSVP even if you are not planning on eating dinner so we can arrange for enough chairs. Thank you.)

Our price structure has changed again. But don’t dispair! The normal meeting price has gone down!! Back to $20!!! The technical portions of our meetings are free to all, of course, but we do need to charge if you plan on joining us for the accompanying dinners. Students are completely free, if they register for the meeting on time— $5 otherwise. And season passes—which are valid for the 6–7 planned normal technical meetings this season*—will still be available for the same price as last year: $75—still a great deal!

Footnotes

* Season passes are not valid for Industry Night or the Educational Symposium.
