Second meeting of the season: National Involvement Night

Please join us for our second technical meeting of the year on October 16, 2008, at Rothchild Catering & Conference Center. Say hello to our new chapter officers for this year: Elena Garlea, Beth Armstrong, Anthony Belvin, and Reeshema Burrell.

Dr. Mario Epler of Carpenter Technologies will be giving a presentation titled Applications of Computational Modeling in Producing Specialty Alloys
Computational modeling presents great opportunities for advancement in alloy and process development programs. Simulation allows for timely and cost effective analysis of a wide range of processing and metallurgical variables when performing research and development. Modeling can be used to solve problems in current products and processes or be applied to the design and implementation phases of new products and processes. This presentation will discuss some of the uses of modeling in aerospace alloy production environments where a great number of different processing routes exist. Examples of modeling for each step of the primary alloy design and processing (melt to ship) will be given. Molten metal handling, solidification, hot working/conversion, heat treating, and cold working will be shown. Modeling can give insight into material behavior during processing that may not be available otherwise, especially in large scale, large section size products. This ability shortens the time for alloy development and scale up from small laboratory based heat to full scale production without many costly trials. Additionally, modeling can be used to make a process more efficient, which is of criticality as energy and raw material costs continue to rise. Some current limitations of modeling software will be discussed and speculation on opportunities for advancement will be made.

About the speaker . . .

Dr. Mario Epler

Mario is currently employed as a metallurgist in the Process Modeling group in Research and Development at Carpenter Technology Corporation. His focus is computational modeling and simulation of metal processing including tundish design, ingot casting, ingot conversion, billet, bar, wire and strip production, heat treating, prediction of residual stresses, and microstructure development. He holds a BS, MS, and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University where he performed research in the Institute for Metal Forming. Mario was the recipient of the 2007-2008 Outstanding Young Member award from the Lehigh Valley Chapter of ASM International. He has participated on the executive committee of the chapter since 2004, most recently as the Mat Camp chairman, and is proud to be a member of the executive committee that was recently awarded the 2007-2008 Chapter of Excellence Award in Category IV.

Make your reservation

Please RSVP by filling out this form, or contacting our Meeting Registration Chair, Amit Shyam, by e-mail or phone at 865.241.4841. We must have an accurate count of attendees by COB on Friday, October 10th, so please make your reservation on time if you plan on attending dinner. (Please RSVP even if you are not planning on eating dinner so we can arrange for enough chairs. Thank you.)

Our price structure has changed again. But don’t dispair! The normal meeting price has gone down!! Back to $20!!! The technical portions of our meetings are free to all, of course, but we do need to charge if you plan on joining us for the accompanying dinners. Students are completely free, if they register for the meeting on time—still $5 otherwise. And season passes—which are valid for the 6–7 planned normal technical meetings this season*—will still be available for the same price as last year: $75—still a great deal!

Footnotes

* Season passes are not valid for Industry Night or the Educational Symposium.
