About the Oak Ridge Kennel Club

[image] The Oak Ridge Kennel Club is an American Kennel Club Licensed Club that seeks to promote the sport of purebred dogs while providing service for its community and fellowship for all interested in our canine friends. In addition to monthly meetings and weekly training classes the club also sponsors an annual AKC Licensed Conformation and Obedience Show each Spring and a B.-O.B. Match each Fall. Throughout the year the club holds programs of service and interest to the entire community.

Meetings

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club holds its regular meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at The Soup Kitchen,47 Tennessee Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN.

Directions to the Soup Kitchen: Coming into Oak Ridge from Illinois Ave.
Turn right on Oak Ridge Turnpike (State Rd. 95)
Go approximately 2.5 miles to Tyler Ave.
Traffic light at Tyler.
McDonald's will be ahead on the right.
Turn left onto Tyler. Go to the traffic light
Turn right onto Tennessee.
The Soup Kitchen will be on the left
at the corner of Towne Ave.
Across from the Blue hound Grill.

Anyone interested in dogs is welcome. Each month there is a different program or speaker on a subject of interest to dog lovers.  
The Woofer  for the coming month will have details of the program on the first page.



ORKC HAS AN EMAIL DISCUSSION LIST!

Email lists are a great way for club members to keep in touch with each other and to keep up with club happenings. You can easily ask questions of other club members,
post club-related information,
or have discussions about all aspects of dogs and training.

Training Classes

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club has Training Classes in both obedience and conformation.
Classes are held on the ORKC property.
It is formerly the National Guard Armory on Oak Ridge Highway.  
Our property is directly behind the old armory.

The property is 2 blocks west of the intersection of  Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Hwy. 

Turn just before you get to Girls, Inc,(1798 Oak Ridge Turnpike)
 turn right again at the bottom of the drive
 and drive behind the Armory building.

It is adjacent to Girls, Inc.
If you get to the Shell station, you have gone too far.

Fall classes will begin Tuesday September 9, 2008
Classes end October 28, 2008

When registering for a class please include the following information 
 
1. Your name and dog's name
2. Phone number
3. Email address
4. Which class you would like to sign up for
5. Classes the dog may have taken before
6. Age of dog (important for beginners and puppy class)
7.  If you are signing up for a four week class please specify which dates 
  
You will receive a phone call or email confirming that your message was received and that you are in a class.  IF you do not receive a message please try again and assume you are not in a class until you do have a conformation.

ALL CLASSES WILL BE 8 WEEKS EXCEPT FOR PUPPY CLASSES  WHICH ARE FOUR WEEKS EACH.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS.  Please note these have changed and will be in effect starting with the January 2009 classes.

Conformation- This class is for those who wish to show their dog in the conformation ring. This is a drop-in class and pay as you go.
Puppy class- This class is for puppies three months to no more than 20 weeks old on the first night of class. Puppies should have had their second round of vaccinations. Puppies learn how to meet and interact with other dogs and people. They also learn a few simple commands. This is a four week class.
Beginners- This class is for dogs at least six mos. old on the first night of class. Dogs learn obedience to important basic commands and how to walk politely on a leash. Handlers learn the basics of dog training. 
Canine Good Citizen Class- This class is for dogs that have completed the Beginner class or its equivalent and are at least 8 mos. old. Dogs and handlers work toward the CGC test. Dogs learn good public manners, obedience to commands during distractions and to accept being handled by someone they don't know.
Rally- This class is for dogs that have completed the CGC class or its equivalent. Handlers learn to read and perform signs for rally competition. Dogs and handlers learn to work as a team to complete a rally course to prepare for competition.
Prenovice/Novice- This class is for dogs that have completed the CGC class or its equivalent. Dogs and handlers learn to perform the exercises and learn the rules of the prenovice and novice class in competitive obedience. They learn how to work as a team to achieve the CD title.
Open/Utility- This class is for dogs and handlers that are working toward competition in the Open and Utility classes in competitive obedience. Dogs must be able to work off lead. Handlers must bring their own dumbbell, metal and leather scent articles and gloves to class.
Unstructured- This is an open time for obedience competitors to practice their skills. There is no instruction provided. This class is limited to four open/utility trainers or to five novice trainers.

 [image]Membership in The Oak Ridge Kennel Club is open to anyone who is interested in dogs. Annual dues are $15/yr. for a single member and $20/yr. for a couple or family. You can pick up a Membership Application at the monthly meeting, one of our training classes or print out the Form that you can get to by clicking on "Membership Form" at the bottom of this section and then mail the Application Form along with yearly dues to:

Breeder Referral

If you are interested in acquiring a purebred dog and would like to know if there are some local breeders for the type of dog in which you are interested come to one of our meetings to discuss the subject with our members or check with the National Breed Club for that breed at:

Before you buy any breed of dog, however, you should learn as much as you can about that breed. You can, for example, fill out a simple questionaire at the following site to get a better idea about what kind of dog might be right for you. Click on: Select A Dog.
