Checklist

 

Preparing for the family's arrival

 

 

¾      Start looking into possible employment for each adult in the family.  Sometimes job skills are listed on the family’s bio-data form (the information that Bridge receives on the family before they arrive).  Check with your general coordinator about it.

 

 

Within one week after arrival

 

¾      Take the family to the Social Security Administration in order to apply for Social Security cards.

 

 

Within two weeks after arrival

 

¾      Attend refugee orientation (with Bridge caseworker) in order to determine job skills and interests of employable adults.

 

¾      Provide employment orientation to each employable adult.

 

¾      Set up at least one job interview.  Stay in contact with your general coordinator or Bridge about leads, or if you need assistance.

 

¾      Once at least one adult is working, explain details such as:  What a W-4 form is, how to call in sick, etc.

 

 

Within four weeks after arrival

 

¾      Collect first month's Volunteer Commitment Sheets from committee members, noting mileage and time. 

 

¾      At least one adult is working.

 

¾      Start working toward employment of any other employable adults in the household

 

 

After the first month/ongoing needs

 

¾      Continue to collect Volunteer Commitment Sheets through the fourth month.

 

¾      If refugee is unhappy with his/her job, assist him/her in either improving the present job or finding another.
