What is the purpose of Spectrum? Spectrum is a social gathering place for Knoxville-area high school youth who deserve affirmation and support to be themselves, regardless of their sexual orientation, ideas, religious views, race, physical ability, or ethnic background. Who attends Spectrum? Spectrum is limited to high school age youth, 14-18. Seniors are welcome for the summer after graduation. College students do not attend Spectrum as patrons. What happens at Spectrum? Music. Food. Conversation. Board games. Open mic. Movies. Teens who attend Spectrum can help decide. What CAN'T I do at Spectrum? No alcohol, no drugs, no sex and no weapons anywhere on church property at any time. This is strictly enforced. Are adults present? Yes. There are least 3 adults in attendance at all times, along with security. Adults must observe certain guidelines, which are also strictly enforced. In addition, a college-age student may intern as an adult volunteer at Spectrum, but older adults are always present. How can my parents meet the people who run Spectrum? We would be glad to talk with them. They can stop by on a Spectrum night (first and third Saturdays, 7-10:30). They can call the church office (523-4176) and talk to the minister, Rev. Chris Buice. Or they can phone David Massey, one of the primary organizers, at 621-8352. Spectrum is held in a church. Will you try to convert me to your religion or your religious views? No, we will not. The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church is committed to religious tolerance, and we affirm other faith traditions. For more, visit our church Web site and click on "What Do Unitarian Universalists Believe." Also, see UU links at the bottom of the home page. You welcome gay and lesbian teens. Do you try to convert teens to homosexuality? No, we do not attempt to change anyone's sexual orientation. We disagree with those who use coercive tactics in an attempt to change anyone's sexual orientation, whether gay or straight. In fact, like the American Psychological Association, we believe that a person's sexual orientation is not a matter of choice. We DO affirm any teen who identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual, because we believe that homosexuality, like heterosexuality, is a gift, not a curse. Do you offer counseling? No. We can refer teens to a psychologist or counselor, but adult volunteers are trained not to attempt such counseling. However, we will LISTEN to teens who need to talk. We use the "active listening" approach. As an adult, can I volunteer for Spectrum? Yes, we welcome your help at all levels, including working with teens, security, outreach & marketing, and fund raising. Please send your address and phone number to spectrum@korrnet.org. An application will be mailed to you. You must provide references, and you must undergo a police background check. How do I make a financial contribution to Spectrum? You can make a tax deductible contribution by sending a check made out to "TVUUC," 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. Be sure to include "Spectrum donation" in the memo line and include your name and address so we can thank you. How do I find answers to other questions? Call the numbers above or write us at spectrum@korrnet.org.
