Aart Bergwerff (b. 1960) studied organ, choir training, and church music at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He continued his organ studies with Harald Vogel in Bunde, Germany, and with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris, where he received the Prix de Virtuosité.
At the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he studied improvisation under Bert Matter and was granted a Distinction in Organ Improvisation. He also won prizes in international organ competitions in Bruges (1985), Lausanne (1987), and Groningen (1989).
In 1990 he was appointed as Cantor-Organist of the Lutheran Church in The Hague, with its famous Bätz organ dating from 1762.
In 1993, with the Brabant Orchestra, he gave the world premiere of the Concerto for Organ and Orchestra by Jo van den Booren for the inauguration of the organ in the Frits Philips Music Center in Eindhoven. At the invitation of the National Ballet in Amsterdam, he was featured in two series of concerts, playing the Concerto for Organ, Strings, and Timpani by Francis Poulenc with the Dutch Ballet Orchestra.
In 1994 he was appointed to the Rotterdam Conservatory as an organ teacher, where he also teaches organ history and organ building. Under the auspices of the Organ Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church, he advises on restorations as well as on the building of new organs.
Aart Bergwerff plays organ and harpsichord continuo for the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam.
He has recorded three CDs on the Cygnus label, organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
