Third Thursday Book Club

The Third Thursday Book Club (a.k.a. Some Sunday Book Club) will meet on Sunday, February 19, 2006, to discuss The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. We will meet for a light lunch and discussion beginning at 12:30 p.m. (place to be determined and posted).

You may wish to participate in all the book discussions or just select those books of particular interest to you. Discussion is informal and generally relates to plot, theme, and characterizations rather than criticism and writing analysis. This is a fellowship activity, and we welcome anyone who wants to participate. Check the church newsletter, the "Westminster Abbey," for additional information about the books, changes in the listed schedule, or special opportunities with the group.

About the Book Club

For over a decade the Third Thursday Book Club has provided an opportunity for fellowship built upon a love of books and the need to connect on a regular basis in our busy schedules. Discussion is casual and open. The Third Thursday Book Club is eclectic and considers all types of books. In the past the emphasis has been on contemporary fiction, although we have also read nonfiction, inspirational works, juvenile literature, and classical works. It's a lively group that always enjoys an evening with others who love books and reading. You are welcome to come to as many or as few of the meetings as you wish, depending on whether the subject of the book interests you. Bring a friend!

Here are the books we discussed last year: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, Harvest by Catherine Landis, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer, The Known World by Edward P. Jones, and Girl Meets God by Lauren Winner.

And the year before: Life of Pi by Patel, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich, Atonement by Ian McEwan, Water Dreams by Jeanne McDonald, The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown, Blessings by Anna Quinlen, and Abou and the Angel Cohen by Claude Campbell.
