Westminster's Worship services are on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. during the regular year, with Sunday School classes for all ages at 10:00 a.m. The nursery (for newborn through 4 years) is available Sunday mornings, 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
For students in grades 6 through 12 there is a new program, the Youth Connection, with two groups, the Middle School Connection and the High School Connection. For more information, call the church office, 584-3957, ext. 13.
In addition to Sunday School, adult Christian Education opportunities include theology study on the 2nd and 4th Fridays at 7:00 a.m. as well as a class on Wednesday evenings at 6:30.
Rehearsal schedules for the various choirs in the Music Program are included in the church's Weekly Calendar. Concerts, such as our organ series, Musica Organi, and performances by our drama group, the Westminster Players, are listed under Special Events, as are special worship services and other special congregational activities.
In 2008 the summer schedule (no Sunday School, Worship at 10:00 a.m.) runs Sunday, May 25, through Sunday, August 31. We resume our regular schedule on Rally Day, September 7.
The choirs in the Music Program do not have regular rehearsals during the summer (several groups will resume rehearsals in August).
Vacation Bible School for children and youth, ages 2 through high school, will be held Monday, June 23, through Thursday, June 26, from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day.
Westminster has now established an archive of recent sermons to download and play. (Please note: These are large files. Depending on the speed of your connection and the configuration of your computer, there may be a delay before the sound begins.)
People from many sections of Knoxville and outlying areas in East Tennessee are attracted to Westminster because of a refreshing ministry characterized by
community -- a warm, welcoming spirit to let you know you belong;
compassion -- a reaching out to others in the community and the world and a desire to relate faith to life issues; and
creativity -- an awareness of our wonderful variety of gifts and ways of communicating faith, hope, love, truth, and beauty.
Fritz Schilling, Westminster's Minister Emeritus, has been coordinating relief efforts in The Presbytery of East Tennessee. The presbytery has already made a number of Work Trips to the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina, and these efforts are continuing.
The first two trips, in October 2005, were specifically for college-age students. The work teams on those trips were able to help many, many people who were desperate and had no way to begin putting their homes back together. Your offerings of time, talent, and treasure have made that happen! On the third trip, November 5-12, about fifteen people headed to Bay St. Louis to the First Presbyterian Church, where they helped with work in the neighborhood and scouting jobs for our big trip after Christmas. The fourth trip to the Gulf area -- based in Gulfport, Mississippi, at First Presbyterian Church -- was December 27 through January 2. Some of the volunteers shared their reflections in a Weblog. Another Gulf Coast mission trip, again to Mississippi, was March 18-25, 2006. In October 2006 there were several work trips to Mississippi, and there was another in March 2007.
Westminster's high-school youth had a mission trip to Long Beach, Mississippi, the week of June 2-9, 2007, working with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance on homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
As people of faith we are called to make peace. As a congregation we signed on to the Presbyterian Peacemaking Commitment. In the midst of world crises, we need more than ever to take this calling and commitment to Peacemaking seriously. Good sources of information regarding current efforts for peace in the Middle East are the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the National Council of Churches.
